September Poll: Will the new school year make life easier or harder?

Posted on | September 4, 2009 | Comments Off

[Okay, if I'm honest here, I'll admit that even if I do really want to get some responses to this month's poll, my real reason for writing this post is that it's Friday and I was looking for a good excuse to post one of my favorite songs to my Friday Musical Interludes.]

Here’s a particular personality quirk of mine that completely doesn’t matter but that you might find interesting anyway: I happen to really love new beginnings. Maybe it’s because I’m an Aries, I don’t know, but I’ve always loved the feeling of starting out, starting over, starting something new.

So, possibly it will come as no surprise to you to learn that three of my favorite months of the year are January, March and September.

Wait … September?

January is obviously the beginning of a new year and March brings the spring (and, in some cultures, a new year).

And September brings a new school year.

(Pause for musical interlude … )

Once upon a time, several centuries ago, I went to school and was one of the few people my age who actually looked forward to the beginning of a new school year. For one thing, I happened to like school. For another, I liked the fresh start/clean slate feel that September brought with it.

I sort of lost that in those years between the time when I was in school and the time when my children were in school. Now, it’s back with me as I prepare to send my little darlings back into the world of youth academia.

And, I’ve been hearing enough about starting school from the folks I hang out with online to be curious about how large that event is looming for my fellow microbusiness owners.

Of course, most of you probably have started already. We are starting late in my neck of the woods, because of the fact that Labor Day is about as late as it’s possible for Labor Day to be this year.

Still, even if you are not into “new” and “fresh” like I am, this time of year signals change, a different pace, the snowball getting pushed off the top of the hill to rumble past Columbus Day and Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas and, finally, coming to rest at the bottom of the hill known as New Year’s Day.

There’s always a lot to squeeze into the end of a year. And it all always starts when we send our little darlings back to school, does it?

Happy Friday, friends!
