Random thoughts a week before Election Day

One of the things that happens when you have a presidential election campaign that lasts for two years is that it’s very length gives all the nut-jobs time to out themselves. I haven’t decided if that’s a good thing or not.
It does make me wonder what all those people who are currently obsessing on this election will find to do with themselves when, less than a week from now, it’s finally all over.
My basic feeling on the matter is that the whole thing just establishes something I’ve always believed: there really is such a thing as too much foreplay.
Since all the elections will be over at pretty much the same time, that will also give members of Congress an opportunity to stop thinking about nailing the job for another two or six years and start doing the tag end of the job they’ve got now. And there’s been some talk about another economic stimulus package but details on what might be in that package are sketchy.
And, for some of us at least, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Even if you’re not in retail, the end of the year can bring any number of business-related chores — making plans for next year, preparing to close out your books for this year, last-minute tax planning to reduce your 2008 tax liabilities, holiday outreach to clients and members of your network.
Somehow, to me, the end of the 2008 campaign season will be a signal that it’s time for things to get back to normal. I don’t know about you but I am very much looking forward to that.
