Don’t tell anybody, but …

Exxon Mobil made a huge profit last year, dad gum it! In fact, in 2005, they surpassed Wal-Mart as the nation’s most profitable company. They’re feeling a bit embarrassed about it, too.

Well, maybe “embarrassed” is the wrong word. Let’s just say they’re worried about the possibility that, along with the profitability thing, they are going to also surpass Wal-Mart as everybody’s favorite corporate-conglomerate-to-hate.

My hunch, though, is that on some level they are willing to live with the hostility. Or, at least, they aren’t embarrassed enough about that $36 billion in income in 2005 to be talking about giving it back to consumers.
